When experienced Children in BJJ transition to adult what Belt rank do they have?

get rank
Bruce Tzu asked:

If a kid starts training in BJJ at an early age what rank would they be as a teenager? Assume they move up the children ranks, I believe the Adult ranking starts at 15?

Depends on how the school has nurtured and graded them.

Usually they need to drop back to a rank that is realistic, because a brown belt child is still a child. So they will need to find their new place amongst men.

A good teacher will guide him/her well. But the child needs to understand that the transition from child to adult has to be realistic. Maybe the school even has a kind of “coming-of-age” grading test where he/she can prove themselves. Treat it honorably so they can be proud no matter what rank they end up with.

From what I have seen there isn’t a seperate belt system between kids and adults in BJJ.

Mostly because there isn’t a whole lot of competetion for smaller kids in BJJ, mostly older kids.

From what I have seen is that kids really only reach certain belt levels, they keep that. For example most kids only make it to purple belt, it isn’t until they are older that they can acheive black belt.

For example Kyra Gracie didn’t get her black belt until she was 20 years old , but she was competing at 13 and winning National and World titles long before she got her black belt.

It is my experience that most kids under 13 don’t make it past blue, kids under 16 don’t make it past purple, and anyone under 18 don’t make it past brown.

But there isn’t the whole drive towards belts in BJJ, in BJJ you generally don’t have a need to try to keep kids by advancing them in grade. It is accepted it takes a long time to acheive any rank, so therefore it is that much bigger of an acheivement when you do.

    Just my experience.
