What rank can I go back into the Navy as?

get rank
Joe S. asked:

I got out of the Navy about 1.5 years ago. I am thinking of rejoining. I heard once that if I went back in I would drop a rank but only for 6 months, is this true? BTW, I got out with an Honorable discharge, RE1, and I am 29. I was in for 6 years.
Yeah but I am looking at going back into the Navy. I’ve actually been talking to the Guard and that may be an option, but I know and miss the Navy.
So my old rating is Creo 1 I believe, actually looking it up right now. Even though I have been out for that long I still have the chance of keeping my E5. That is cool. Thanks.
OK, I was a CTR 2 and my rate is still a CREO 1. I didn’t have an NEC. I did cross from FC to CTR and I had an NEC of 1115 as an FC. I would rather go back in as a CTR and if I could keep my rank, that would be AWESOME! I know the National Guard did say I can get into their officer program, but I would have to go through boot camp and then OCS which could take a very long time. Just trying to make a decision.

You should be able to keep rank. I have been out 8 years and kept mine. Marines to National guard though. You should have the upper hand in negotiating, also make sure you look into the bonuses before they disappear. Good luck.

If you were enlisted, if you remain off active duty for 90 days you lose at least one pay grade. You go back at that lower grade with zero time in grade but real time in service.

getting back in right now is almost impossible..even PS Navy. if you must cross rate you can expect to lose one paygrade and have to do the full TIR before eligible to promote. if your old rating is CREO 1, you stand a better chance of getting back in AND keeping your old paygrade.

A guy I knew got out as a GM2. When he went to get back in 1.5 years later, GM was closed. So he had the choice to get back in as an ET. While he went through A-school (about 6 months) he was an e-3. The day he took the final test and was rated as an ET, he was ET2. So you may be brought down to E-3 if your old rate is closed (CTR shouldn’t be) while you’re in A-school. But you will get your rank back right away.
