O-1 me thinks
if you go officer you get o-1 (o-3 if its in psychology i believe)
e-3 if you stupidly decide to go enlisted.
It depends on what your PHD is in. Usually unless you are a medical doctor, dentist, or lawyer, you will still be an 0-1 after completion of Officer Training School.
If you are directly commissioned as a doctor you may come in as a O-3 or higher. Depends on your degree.
If you enlist e-3 or e-4 depending on your service. If you go for OCS or a Direct Commission it could be anywhere from an O1 up to an O4 depending on what your PHD is in and what specialty they need. My mother came in as an O4 in the Army with a Masters in Nursing.
Actually I think, on the enlisted side of the Army you can come in as E4. A friend of mine has a Masters and that’s the rank he started as.
Destruction1k is right about something though: getting a post-grad degree before enlisting really is stupid. You’ve already invested 6-8 years of your adult life sitting in a classroom–would you really still have the energy and motivation to do the same job as 17-18 year olds. Your first-line supervisor may likely not care about the knowledge you’ve obtained in college and may be resentful.
If your heart’s set on going enlisted, I WOULD recommend getting a 2 or 4 year degree first though as you could use those credit hours to max out that category of promotion points. After you’re in, you can do post-grad work online or as a reservist.
If you already have a post-grad degree, your best bet is to get a direct commission and join as an officer.
It does matter what your PhD is in. Some would warrant a commission of O-3, but most of the time you will enter as an O-1. It also depends on the service that you are joining (Army, Marines, AF, or Navy)…they may be extremely short of that MOS and you could gain higher rank that way.
You’d prolly make more money in the civilian world…why bother?
if you enlist:
Marines would give you E2.
AF, Navy and CG: E3
Army: E4(specialist.)
if you are seeking a commission: O1 across the board UNLESS you are seeking a DIRECT cvommission as a professional: Doctor, Lawyer, Nurse, or Clergy. depending on education level and job experience, as high as O5. with the exception of JAG, the Mariens do not have DIRCOM officers.
