carbar asked:

What is the significance of putting your cumulative GPA and class rank on the FAFSA? Is cumulative referring to grades 9 through 12, or like UC/State schools does it excluding grade 9?

In order to qualify each year for FAFSA you have to at least keep up an average GPA.

You should ask your school first if they have already filed your GPA for you since you need the school’s authorization and also because schools like my high school automatically files it for every senior (make sure they have your correct social security number). By submitting your class rank and GPA, the FAFSA can help you look for scholarships, grants, and loans that you may be qualified for under certain conditions such as a minimum GPA or a high class ranking.

The cumulative GPA is different for different for different grants I believe. Your school should know which one it should be but my guess would be excluding grade 9.

For me, I’ve just received an email about this. I live in California so I’m not sure if this would be helpful but just to give you an idea. ^^

“This message is from the California Student Aid Commission. The Commission administers the state Entitlement and Competitive Cal Grant programs. These are college grant programs for students.

We have sent you this e-mail because you have filed a federal FAFSA application to be considered for college financial aid. The Commission can use your FAFSA information to consider you for a state Cal Grant award but only after you have your Grade Point Average (GPA) sent to us by your school. Please contact your former high school to see if they can submit a Cal Grant GPA for you. Students can receive consideration for Entitlement Cal Grants only using a high school GPA. Or, if you have completed at least 24 college semester units, your college can submit your college GPA so you can receive consideration for a Competitive Cal Grant.

The school can either submit the GPA to us on-line or they may ask that you download and complete a paper GPA Verification Form located here: Only the school can certify to your GPA – transcripts are not accepted. If you will be sending in the paper GPA form, your school must certify the GPA before you mail it to us.

The easiest way to verify when a GPA is processed for you is to open a WebGrants for Students account. To access WebGrants for Students, go to the Commission’s website at and look for the WebGrants for Students link on the right side. To open a WebGrants for Students account you must enter your name in the same way that it is showing on your FAFSA record.”

By the way, there is no minimum GPA needed for you to file the FAFSA. Anyone can file it because everyone has the right to get financial aid. >

You put the GPA you graduated or will graduate with. That information is reported to the colleges you select to receive your FAFSA information. It is also used for statistically for the government.
