Seed is the ranking of a player in a certain tournament.
Ranking is the ranking of a player overall worldwide.

You can be ranked #1 in the world but still be seeded #3 in a particular tournament based on the playing conditions, such as the surface of the court, temperature, humidity, etc.

Rank is how many points you have from playing in tournaments overall. Seed is what rank you are but Wimbledon takes into account previous performance on grass. Thus, you can be #1 on points but still seeded #2 on grass.

Ranking is total points acquired. Most points = #1. Seeding (for men) is determined by the following:
-Take ESP points at 19 June 2006
-Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournament in the past 12 months
-Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that.

There isn’t a set seeding formula for women, but the committee can advise on changes between the ranking and the seed order.

Rank is the overall points you have from playing all of the matches, a seed is at a specific tournament. You can have a #1 seed at Wimbledon because you are good at playing on grass, but have a #5 seed at Australian.
