    I guess first do you know which keywords you want to rank your site for? Once you know that you can do your on page seo and build links through articles, blogging and social bookmarking using your keywords as anchor text and insert your keyword throughout your articles and their titles.

    First think is be cool and think before using any technique, if this is recommended by google. No spamming or black hat techniques. Than follow my recommended steps:

    >> Do keyword research on your theme by different online tools and google adwards keyword suggestion.
    >> Optimize your page properly by those keywords.
    >> Start link building by Directory Submission, Social Bookmarking, Article Submission, Blog and forum link posting, reciprocal link exchange (Although it have less value).
    >> try the techniques you learn. I think each techniques you learn have a least contribution.

    Lastly, wait and try hard specially for link building. If you can build thousands links and your on-page optimization done properly definitely you will get good result but work hard for about 6 months.
