Left_Hand_Man asked:

I know he will come out as a 2nd Lt, but what rank advancement will he have after graduation? Out of curiosity.
After graduation, I know he comes out as a 2nd LT, but what kind of rank advancement can he expect after graduation.

Ring knockers advance a bit quicker at first, however it is no guarantee that they will go beyond Col.

Here’s a great site with plenty of detail for you.

But there is an error. Promotions to O-2 (1st LT) is two years, not 18 months as it says.

Regarding the ring knocker comment, generally promotions up to O-6 are through promotion boards. This is from just speaking to a bunch of officers. O-7 and up is through who you know, so that’s when the ring knocking really ramps up.

He has to serve a minimum of 5 years active duty. It is fairly automatic to Captain. So, 18 months to 1st Lieutenant. Then another 24 months to Captain. The majority of officers leave the Army after achieving the rank of Captain. After that, advancement is not so automatic, and if a certain rank is not made by a certain time in grade, an officer is separated from the service.
Calculate regular military compensation at the link. Location makes a significant difference due to the housing allowance(BAH.) Single Enlisted Sailors and Coasties ranking below E-5, Enlisted Marines and Soldiers ranking below E-7, Enlisted Airmen below E-4 live in the barracks and do not collect BAH. This does not include any additional special pays:
    2nd Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Ensign(Navy, C.G.) = O-1.
    1st Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Lt JG(Navy, C.G.) = O-2.
    Captain( Army, Air Force, Marines)= Lt(Navy, C.G.) = O-3.
Advancement to O-2 around the 18th month.
Advancement to O-3 by about 42nd month
    Good Luck!
