Different countries and regions have different systems for classifying wines, in France this tends to be by area, and many of the rules are long established, dating back to 1855. In other places, they may be more driven by annual tastings, and less by tradition.

Champagne is covered by the AC system in France, and are not all the same. There are 3 types of grapes that can be used (Pinot Noir Chardonnay and Pinot Meurnier), and Champagnes are generally made from a blend of wines made from various years, and from grapes from various places (but all in the AC area). There is also variation in Dosage (addition of liquid after removing sediment, and differences in ageing and so on.

Part of the reason there is variation in cost is due to branding ("Hey, I wanna drink Kristal, I dont care what it costs", but there are other factors, such as the length of time the champagne is matured.

It is also worth knowing that the more expensive Champagnes are generally more bready, and "challenging" in taste. Many people prefer the cheaper champagnes which are lighter and more refreshing, rather than having that yeasty, bready flavour that you are paying extra for.

No. Every year, different wine related organizations, magazines, have blind wine tastings to rate champagnes and wines.

That is the best you can hope for. For example, each region in the USA has wine tastings each year and the different vineyards with their wines will be rated. You can check out some award winning US wine makers and see which of their wines have won awards, chardonnays, merlots, etc.

The website is American Made Yes. Look at the beer page and the wine page. or

The same holds true for beers in the USA with yearly tastings and awards made in different categories.

This website does not include champagne because that appellation is only used for wine made in the Champagne region in France.

Champagne is normally kept in an unopened bottle lying flat either in a wine cellar or in the fridge. It is drunk while it is cold and not usually saved after it has been opened unless you want to use it for cooking to impart a tart flavor.

A crystal decanter with a stopper may be used by some people to keep white wine cold until they are ready to use it.
