I think most adcoms understand that many students may have chosen a lower-ranked school simply because it was less-expensive or they may have received a scholarship there. Also, many students might just go to schools near their home so they can live at home with parents and save money. There are a million reasons why a person wouldn't go to the best school they could get into. Also, I think the level of difficulty is the same at every school. I think it would only be a "soft factor" if you went to an ivy league college. So if you went to Harvard they might bump up or chances a little bit but otherwise it doesnt' matter I don’t think it matters what your school is ranked. A few colleges will have a valedictorian, but none of the schools I've attended did any more in the way of rankings. Besides, I can't imagine a grad school in, say, physics comparing your grades against someone who majored in art. Your GPA, test scores, letters of recommendation, and experience are what matter.
