It will probably take 6 months to a year to get to E4. After that, it all depends on whether there’s openings and how you compare to the others who are eligible for the promotion. I know some who wait a year or two to get to E5, and others who are promoted within months because there are so many openings.
Up through E4 it’s all about TIS. You wait it out and it’s a gimme. Here’s a link to tell you how the whole system works on paper.
My husband made his E-5 in Two and half years. After that, there are minimum years in required to make rank. E-6 (Minium 4 years in service). Plus promotion points, passing the board etc. Different MOS’s are easier to get promoted in as well. Or so I’ve been told.
