it is down to your OVERALL performance in all the races. Therefore if you start in first position and stay in first position throughout each race, you will get a better score.
If you’re always trailing in 6th or 7th place but get a bullet or something that lets you win in the last few seconds of the race that is not as good a performance as being 1st throughout the race.
