How can a person obtain a higher military rank?

1. Specifically, if you were a Major, after retiring what would be your Military Rank.
2. How can you be a Colonel?

    you work hard, have a good reputation amongst the men you command, and have good proficiency ratings.

    If you retired a major you would be a retired major, not really sure what your trying to get at there

    Colonel you work your way up for 0-1

    You must meet the minimum time in grade and time in service. In addition you must meet the physical and primary education requirements for the next grade. To reach the rank of colonel, a graduate degree is required as well. It can be from a military college such as the US Army Command and General Staff College or an accredited university.
